About This Item

Berlin: Self published, 1900. Hardcover. Atlas folio (20 1/2" x 26 3/4"). An extraordinary collection of elephant-size cyanotypes comprised of 5 double-page and 22 full-page plates, illustrating decorative iron work examples in the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles. Rendered in meticulous detail, the images convey the master craftsmanship of Berlin designer August Stimming, who produced architectural items at his Kunstschmiede (artistic metal) workshop during the turn-of-century. The designs include patterns for gates, window grilles, hinges, door handles, knockers, locks, and signs. The massive double-page images average 26" x 38 1/2", and the full-page samples measure 19 1/4" x 26 1/2", one being slightly smaller (19 1/4" x 25"). The cyanotype was invented in 1842 by John Herschel and is one of the oldest processes that uses the photosensitivity of materials other than silver to reproduce people landscapes and objects. Originally inexpensive and fairly simple to produce, cyanotypes were used sporadically in photography throughout the 19th century and more frequently into the mid-20th century for the reproduction of technical and architectural drawings, aptly referred to as blueprints. Some age wear, scuffing and water staining on binding, sporadic abrasions on leather. Sporadic foxing to first three leaves, rest of plates in near fine to fine condition. One of the larger books ever published in cyanotype with elaborate, visually striking iron artwork samples. Rare.
