London: Printed for Henry Seile, 1650 i.e. 1651]., 1651. 8vo. pp. 4 p.l., 205. 19th century calf, gilt crest (Constable of Scotland) on covers (joints cracked, spine ends worn, margins closely trimmed but otherwise internally fine). First Edition. The English historian was secretary to Henry Rich, earl of Holland, when Holland was chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He suffered in the cause of Charles I, and was made a gentleman of the privy chamber by Charles II and knighted. The present work was written in reply to a posthumous pamphlet of Sir Anthony Weldon, and has been attributed to Heylin. Included is a section on Sir Walter Raleigh and his voyages to Guiana and Virginia (pp. 74-98). Wing S645. European Americana 651/141. Sabin 31654. Thomason I 830.. 1st Edition. Hardcover.
