About This Item

Pondicherry, India: Sri Aurobindo Society, 1971. First Printing. Wraps. Very good. Oblong 8vo, 10.5 x 7.2 inches, wraps, very good with some tanning, darkening and soil to covers, contents very good. 54 (2) pp, illustrated. No date and no title to the book itself; inserted in the book are 3 pages stapled together: "Aurobindo -- The City of New Life (summary information)," "Sri Aurobindo Ashram," and "Auroville Tour" which has a map in orange of the community near Pondicherry on the Bay of Bengal. No publisher's info on the booklet, but internal evidence suggests that it was published in late 1971 or early 1972; at one point, the book projects that certain projects will be completed by the end of 1972 and also documents work up to mid 1971. Some of the text is derived from Sri Aurobindo Ghose (d. 1950) and from "Mother" (Mirra Alfassa, 1878-1973). Auroville is an experimental township in Viluppuram district, mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, with some parts in the Union Territory of Pondicherry in India. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as "the Mother") and designed by architect Roger Anger. Althgough designed with the prospect of having 50,000 residents, as of 2023 fewer than 3,000 residents are there, mainly from India, France and Germany. We could find no evidence of any copies of this in libraries according to Worldcat.
