"Many new facets of two gold rush stories are revealed in this birsh account of the Australians who followed gold to California and of the Australians and Americans who reversed the direction of the California rush -- by striking it rich in Australia. Using contemporary Australian newspapers, letters, and diaries hitherto neglected by historians, the author has reconstructed the Australians' experiences as thsy crossed the Pacific in frail sailing vessels and settled in booming San Francisco and in Stocton, Sacramento, and Marysville. After learning to pan gold along the Mother Lode, a few retruned to Australia and started a gold rush that dwarfed the Forty-niners' stampede. The author describes the exploits of the Americans who joined this second rush and participated in Australia's 'digger revolt', which led to far-reaching governmental reforms, including the introduction of the secret ballot and other social enactments which have served as models for the rest of the world." from the jacket flap.
