About This Item
The Hogarth Press, London., 1935. First U.K. edition. Translated by James Strachey. Octavo. pp 137, [1] blank, [1] adverts. Frontispiece portrait photograph. No. 26 in the series The International Psycho-Analytical Library.Signed by the author on the front free endpaper: ''Sigm. Freud London 1938''. Above Freud's signature is the ownership signature, dated 1935, of Leonard Browne who went on to become one of the key figures in the founding of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. The Institute itself grew out of the Tavistock Clinic which had been founded in 1920 by the psychiatrist Hugh Crichton-Miller. The name came from its original address in Tavistock Square, where of course the Hogarth Press was also located. The Clinic is now part of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and is based in the Tavistock Centre appropriately near the Freud Museum in Hampstead. Outside the Centre is a memorial statue of Freud.Mounted on the front pastedown is a Typed Letter Signed by Mathilde Hollitscher, the eldest child of Sigmund Freud. The letter comprise about 200 words addressed to Dr. Browne and is on the headed writing paper of 2, Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, which is a few doors away from what was the main house of the Freud family and which is nowadays the Freud Museum. The date of the letter is 9th oct. 39, this being less than three weeks after Freud's death. It is clear that Browne was quite close to the Freud family and Hollitscher concludes by inviting Browne ''for tea or for dinner, just as you like.'' Sigmund Freud arrived in London in June 1938 and Leonard Browne, who was prominent in Psychiatric circles, must have met him shortly thereafter.Half title-page tanned. Covers slightly rubbed at head and tail of spine. Cloth at front joint a bit bubbled. Very good. The remains of the dustwrapper are loosely inserted.
