General Wistar was an attorney, served in the Civil War, was a railroad executive and founded the Wistar Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, but is perhaps best known for his role in the development of California and the Far West. Per Howes, W598: "Largely devoted to the opening development of the far West from 1849 to 1860, in which Wistar played a conspiciuous part before achieving fame and fortune in Pennsylvania." --- In full blue cloth-covered boards w/gilt-stamped spine titling. Includes several photos, a few drawings, and a sizeable fold-out map at rear of volume showing the route taken in 1849 by Wistar from Independence, Missouri to California. Lacks the dust jacket. --- A clean, firm, unmarked copy but with rounded cover corners. ; tall 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 530 pages .
