About This Item

Brooklyn, NY: 13th May, 1868., 1868.. Good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling the first side of a sheet of cream-colored letterhead folded to form 4 sides, each 7 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. The Pierrepont family crest is embossed at the top of the first side. Signed "Henry Pierrepont". The left side of the letter is slightly darkened with a piece out of the left margin, barely grazing one letter of the text. The bottom right corner is chipped. Folded twice for mailing. Good.

Pierrepont sends to A. Benedict Davenport "a copy of the centennial celebration of the occupation of the Pierrepont Mansion in New Haven, thinking it might interest you, as it contains a photograph of James Pierrepont who married your ancestor Abigail Davenport." The family crest at the head of the letter bears the motto "Pie repone te" [Repose in pious confidence].

Henry Evelyn Pierrepont [1808-1888] was called "the first citizen of Brooklyn". Following the incorporation of the City of Brooklyn in 1834, he was made Chairman of the Commission to lay out the streets of the city. The plan would include sites for eleven public parks, and set aside the hilly terminal glacial moraines above Gowanus Creek as the potential location for a large landscaped cemetery. Pierrepont is considered to be one of America's first city planners.
