About This Item
11 Upton Park Villas, Slough, Bucks., 18 February 1853. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. Together with the original envelope (stamp removed). Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879), Victorian narrative painter best known for his murals in the Palace of Westminster depicting episodes in British history from the English Civil War to the Glorious Revolution. In this letter Ward refers to Charles Dickens interest in his picture: I was indeed much flattered by Mr Dickenss notice of my picture. The praise of such a man is as you remark well worth having. It was always a favorite picture of his from the first moment he saw it at the private view of the Royal Academy. G. D. Tomlinson worked in Huddersfield as a portrait painter and copyist for local dignitaries and nobility.
