About This Item
20 Sydenham Hill, London: 9th July 1899. Barry writes: " I have been very pleased to renew acquaintance with a very old friend at the Guildhall, viz. your Turner's 'Fluelen'. Historically it was so insufficiently described in Catalogues that I think you will be glad to hear what I can tell you about it. Some fifty years ago it belonged to my father, the Rev. C. Upham Barry, of Ryde, I.W. On his death in 1883 it came into the possession of my sister, the wife of Colonel P. G. Hewitt...". He goes on to say that he tried to purchase it for £500 to keep it in the family but that she put it up for auction apparently without success and that she finally sold it to Agnews for £400, his father having originally paid £180. He comments that a "blot which formerly existed has been cleverly removed" and enquires as to what the recipient had to pay for the picture. 4-sides 8vo.
