About This Item

VA, 1864. A little faded but still very good, folded, minor soiling and tearing along folds.. [3] pp. Bifolium. 7 x 4.5 inches. Dated July 9th, 1864. O.D.P. [no name given] writes to his brother, Albert, beginning "In the Trenches Near The Appomattox River" telling him of the woes of keeping paper and stamps handy; and joking about his inability to swim, "Tell Frank & Herby that they can both bet me that they can swim, for I can't. So it would not do for me to go in the water with them, for they would keep laughing at me." Then he ends:

"They keep up a steady popping last night at Petersburg. They do most every night, with now and then a big gun. We can hear the musketry quite plane here. We are going to be relieved for 24 hours this morning."
