Description:
Washington D.C., 1869. Single page, entirely in ink manuscript, Very Good. Randall was a Pennsylvania Democrat, born in Philadelphia and a Union soldier during the War. He was Speaker of the House 1876-1881. This letter is an early, unfavorable evaluation of President Grant's character, only two weeks after Grant's inauguration as President. "The chief characteristic thus far developed is his vindictiveness. He must have much changed from the time when he received Lee's surrender. But we shall see the end is not yet.

1884. Signed. GRANT, Ulysses S. Autograph letter signed. Long Branch, New Jersey, July 3, 1884. One leaf, measuring 5 by 8 inches, writing on both sides. Window framed and hinged to a larger frame with portrait and text, entire piece measures 20-1/2 by 32 inches. $6000.Autograph letter signed by Ulysses S. Grant, written shortly before he was diagnosed with throat cancer, a month before his final public appearance, and a year before his death, handsomely framed with one of Mathew Brady's iconic images of Grant in uniform during the Civil War.The letter reads in full: ""Long Branch, N.J. July 3, 1884. Babcock, Fort & Co. Dear Sir: Your letter of the 27th is just now before me. I have no steel plate or other likeness to send you. In Badeau's history of my campaigns will be found a very good ingraving. Badeau's address is Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y. Very truly yours, U.S. Grant."" In 1884, Babcock, Fort & Co. published Benjamin Babcock's The Presidential Favorites, described as ""a political hand-book, containing the portraits of over twenty American statesmen, together with their biographies, and an epitome of every national political convention ever held in the United States"": this letter is clearly in response to their request for a portrait for the upcoming publication. Grant has instead directed them to consult Adam Badeau, Grant's aide-de-camp and the author of The Military History of Ulysses S. Grant, and was instrumental in the organization and writing of Grant's Memoirs, which were finished mere weeks before Grant's death in July 1885. Expected fold lines. Fine condition.
