Kinglake was M.P. for Bridgewater from 1857 to 1868. ‘I cannot think of any channel through which I could help Mr Rudolph to attain his objects; for, although I could of course ask Layard, the under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to do what you wish, I gather from what you say that the official channel would be barred ... ’
