May 7, 1900
Dear Mr. Howard:
It would be such rest & refreshment for us if we could take advantage of your hospitable offer! But our youngest daughter's health is such that of late we are obliged to remain constantly by her to the end that the physician's efforts may be vigilantly & capably seconded, & her slowly improving strength building for the homeward flight in July.
My wife & I, join in cordial thanks to you & to Mrs. Howard for your kind invitation & in sharp regrets that we must lose the privilege & pleasure which you offer us.
Sincerely yours,
S.L. Clemens.
