About This Item

N.p., n.d., ca. 1845. Original autograph note of six lines and approx. 35 words. Mounted to leaf apparently removed from bound volume, engraved portrait (not of Lardner) mounted to verso with contemporary pencil caption "Minister to England." Some toning and soil, else a Very Good example. Brief note dated simply "Sunday morning" and informing the recipients, unnamed editors of the American journals the "U.S. Gazette," the "Pennsylvanian," the "Courier & Enquirer," and the "Philadelphia Gazette," that "Dr. Lardner having found that the preparation for his lectures will require more time than he expected requests that the advertisement which was left for inspection tomorrow may be allowed to stand over for a few days." In Lardner's hand though written in the third person. Dionysius Lardner (1793-1859) was an Irish scientific author and editor of the 133-volume the "Cabinet Cyclopaedia" (1830-1844). This note presumably written during his lecture tour in the United States in 1845, requesting that the newspapers addressed postpone publishing advertisements for the lectures to be delivered until further preparations have been made.
