About This Item

Very good. - The autograph of Jacob Wainwright, who served as explorer David Livingstone's attendant from the time he was about 14 years old, penned on 1-2/2 inch high by 2-7/8 inch wide card stock removed from an autograph album. Signed "Jacob Wainwright" by the Black African man who was born "Yamuza" and baptized with an English name after being rescued from Arab slave traders. There are paper remnants adhering to the verso of the card, else near fine.

Born "Yamuza", Jacob Wainwright (c.1859-1892) has an uncertain birth date. Born to the Yao people of East Africa, Wainwright was rescued by a British anti-slavery ship after being kidnapped by Arab slave traders. Baptized by his rescuers, he was educated at a Church Missionary Society school in Bombay, British India and stayed at the Nassick African Asylum for freed slaves. When still but a teen of about 14 years of age, Wainwright was hired to accompany Dr. David Livingstone as he explored East Africa. When Livingstone died near the edge of Bangweulu Swamps in Zambia in 1873, Wainwright, together with Abdullah Susi and James Chuma, transported the explorer's body over 1,000 miles to the British consulate in Zanzibar. As the most literate member of the party, Wainwright read from the Book of Common Prayer at Livingstone's funeral and took upon himself the responsibility of writing a letter informing Livingstone's son and the relief expedition of the explorer's death. Wainwright then guarded the explorer's body on its journey to Britain and served as the only African pallbearer at Livingtone's funeral in Westminster Abbey. Wainwright stayed in England for a while before returning to Africa to teach freed slaves in Mombasa. His records of his experiences on Livingstone's mission and his subsequent journey following the explorer's death were later published by the Hakluyt Society.
