Issued in printed soft wrappers, which are now bound in to attractive quarter brown calf with mottled boards. Gilt stamped title to spine. Original front cover has mounted b/w illustration of chess-playing automaton. Author, title and illustration within ornamental border. This work describes false automatons; devices that appear to move, think, and act of their own accord or by clockwork, but are instead controlled by some hidden apparatus or device operated by a conjurer or their assistant. Includes sections on Robert-Houdin, and the chess playing 'The Turk' of Wolfgang von Kempelen. Adolphe Blind was often referred to as 'Professeur Magicus'. Text in French. Back cover printed: Grave ́et imprimé par S.A.D.A.G. Genève. In very good condition. Neat ink name to front blank page. [4], 9-80 pages : illustrations, portraits, plans. 255 x 180 mm (10 x 7 inches). . Rare. Première édition. Livre relié. La couverture originale comporte une illustration en noir et blanc d'un automate jouant aux échecs. L'auteur, le titre et l'illustration se trouvent dans une bordure ornementale. Cet ouvrage décrit de faux automates, des appareils qui semblent bouger, penser et agir de leur propre chef ou selon un mécanisme d'horlogerie, mais qui sont au contraire contrôlés par un appareil ou un dispositif caché actionné par un prestidigitateur ou son assistant. Comprend des sections sur Robert-Houdin et 'Le Cosaque' de Wolfgang von Kempelen, qui joue aux échecs. Adolphe Blind était souvent appelé "Professeur Magicus".
