John William Lindt (1845-1926) was born in Frankfurt and as a teenager, ran away from home to join a Dutch merchant ship sailing to Australia. After working at several jobs in Melbourne, he assisted fellow German photographer Conrad Wagner before opening taking over the management in 1869. He opened his own studio in 1873. He travelled to Papua New Guinea in 1885, the New Hebrides in 1890, and Fiji in 1892 photographing natives and landscapes. [Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 5, (MUP), 1974].His "exeptional compositional ability and meticulous attention to exposure and printing technique" (Hannavy. Encyclopaedia of Nineteenth Century Photographers") garnered him many awards and is considered one of Australia's most pre-eminant 19th Century photographers. The Fiji images were reproduced in "Queensland Geographical Journal: Including the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, Queensland, Volumes 7-10" capturing images of the fire-walking ceremony. He travelled to the New Hebrides early in 1893 and the images taken were presented to the Royal Geographical Society and were thought to have been for a proposed but unpublished publication entitled "Picturesque New Hebrides" c. 1893.
