About This Item
New York: Harper's. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. The covers are the original red decorated publisher's cloth binding. Included is a 4 page AUTOGRAPHED handwritten LETTER from the author to the prominent American novelist, Mrs. George C. Riggs (Kate Douglas Wiggin) in which she thanks her for the receipt of her (Wiggin's) letter and then describes her frustration with this book and which was written one month after its publication. The letter is date Aug 9th, 1906, Kennebunckport, Me. The letter's envelope is tipped in the inside the front cover and the letter is inside the envelope. This is an interesting an unique item. The author did not sign the book, and it is unknown who the original owner was or how the letter came to be associated with this book, however there is a short type-written note mentioning Miss Geraldine Farrar (most likely the prominent opera singer) who came to know Mark Twain through the offices of Kate Douglass Wiggin, and the note mentions a luncheon Twain gave for several women, including Kate Douglas Wiggin, Amy Lowell, Mrs. Farrar, etc. in New York City in 1907. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 357 pages; Signed by Author .
