About This Item

New York: Random House, 1949. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/fair. Laurent de Brunhoff. In which Babar's Children go on a picnic with Zephir and Babar's cousin, Arthur, and visit a tribe in its native village, take part in native dances and help the chief capture a wild boar. A controversial book due to its stereotypical portrayal of Africans. The book was taken out of print in the 1960s, after Toni Morrison, then an editor at Random House, protested the depiction of "savages". The author agreed to have the book taken out of print. Coverboards are clean and bright with some bumping on bottom edge and wear at corners. Pictorial endpapers. Gift inscription dated 1949 on front pastedown endpaper. Bottom 2.5" of pages shows separation from stitched binding, but does not threaten overall security of binding. Two pages have tears at bottom; largest being a closed tear about 1.75"on first page of text. Some yellowing around edges of pages. Dust jacket is in a clear, removable mylar protective cover. Jacket is NOT price-clipped. Jacket has some tears and missing pieces. Happy to provide photos upon request. Size: Folio. 39 pp.

About Bibliodditiques

Thank you for visiting the home page of BIBLIODDITIQUES - specializing in children's literature, non-fiction, and rare and antiquarian books. This year marks my 12th anniversary in the book trade. I am a graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (2009) and a member of the IOBA (International Online Booksellers Association). I take pride in offering books that are of the same quality that I like to see in my own private collection. Books I sell must meet my own high standards of condition, which generally requires that the binding be tight, dust jackets be intact, and that there be no major defects. I do not offer books that are ex-library copies, unless they are hard to find in any condition. Customer satisfaction is very important to me. I am happy to answer any questions you may have and to send you photos of my listings upon request. Your patronage is greatly appreciated.
