With warm / good wishes. / Philip Hanson Hiss / Sarasota, Florida / 10 May 1962" Philip Hanson Hiss III (1910-1988) was a photographer, author, and world traveler, who served in the Far Eastern Division of the Office of Strategic Service (OSS) during World War II. Hiss spent a year in Bali exploring the island and researching the traditions and customs of the Balinese people. During his residence there he met Margaret Mead. His study of the history and culture of the island informs the text of this book and greatly enhances the amazing images he captured with his cameras. There are scenes of fishermen on their boats, shots of cock-fighting, superb scenic photographs, magnificent images of religious ceremonies and cremation processions, and, of course, dramatic photographs of the traditional dancing for which Bali is famous. Donald Sultner-Welles (1914-1981) , was also a world traveler and photographer, though he worked primarily in color transparencies, in contrast to Hanson Hiss who favoured b&w photographic prints. Nonetheless, the two men clearly shared an interest in the world and representing it photographically - a very nice association. ; Signed by Author . ; Travel and Exploration, Photography, Most Recent Listing .
