About This Item
London: Leonard Smithers & Co, 1899. 7th imp. hardback. Very good, important 7th edition (1st to name Wilde as author, Smithers' last to publish), no d/j, mustard boards, cream clothbound spine with gilt titling (some fading); text block firm, untrimmed pages tight and unmarked (some spotting on edges and endpapers.). 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Wilde's famous poem was written in exile in Berneval-le-Grand, after his release from Reading Gaol on 19 May 1897 (he had been incarcerated after being convicted of gross indecency with other men in 1895 and sentenced to two years' hard labour in prison). During his time Charles Thomas Wooldridge was hanged (a soldier in the Royal Horse Guards). He had been convicted of cutting the throat of his wife, Laura Ellen, earlier that year near Windsor. He was aged 30 when executed.Having previous been published under the authorship of C.3.3. in the first 6 impressions (c5000 copies made from 1898), the 7th was the first time Wilde's identity was revealed (although many already had guessed).
