About This Item

Sylvan Press, London, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Photographic & Illustrations. Preface by author, nine appendices, notes on illustrations, notes, bibliography and index. The text is illustrated with 60 illustrations, mostly black-and-white drawings, but with the occasional black and white photograph. Silver coloured cloth covered boards with embossed titles and decoration in dark red to the front panel and back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with red and black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Further books from the publication house has been printed to the verso of the dustwrapper. Quoting from the front panel blurb " ... the author has set out to trace, in 209 pages of text and 61 illustrations, the history of the ballet from its earliest beginnings with the Italian Renaissance to the present day." Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges; bumping of the top book corners with rubbing of the other book edges. Sunning to the back strip and to the book edges. Offset tanning to the end pages with previous owners name along the front hinge. The major damage to the book is that a previous owner has underlined large sections of the text in red and blue coloured ink along with making marks against some of the paragraphs. Chipping of the dustwrapper corners and a little to the back strip edges. There is 1/2 inch tear to the top left hand corner of the front panel. Creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the panels. The white coloured background has yellowed and shows quite marked results of handling. Sunning to the back strip. A previous owner has supported the top back strip edge with a attached piece of sticker – and there is sunning to the verso back strip. The lower back strip corners have small tears. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 214, [2] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Photographic & Illustrations. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Dance; Ballet; 1940s; History. Inventory No: 0287724. .
