About This Item

Hannover-Doehren: Hanno von Hirschheydt. Very Good. 1965-77. First Edition. wrappers. German text. Publisher's printed wrappers. German text. The final 11 volumes of this interesting periodcal concerning many aspects of Baltendeutsch life in the Baltic region -- Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The final three volumes are in a smaller 8vo format; the last volume is dated 1975-1977 and has the heralldic bookplate of Constantin Baron Stackelberg tipped to the verso of the front wrapper. The editor, Harro von Hirschheydt (1925–2017), was a Baltic German publisher, bookseller and translator of Latvian literature. Some of the various contents of this periodical trace histories of many family names in the German-speaking Baltic regions. Constantine Stackelberg, former owner of this set, was a retired economist with the Economic Development Administration in the Department of Commerce, who died in 1989 in Washington, aged 90. Baron Stackelberg was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of Baron Nikolai Stackelberg -- a master of ceremonies at the Czarist court. Mr. Stackelberg earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Wurzburg in Germany and worked in the London branch of the Banque Belgique pour l'Etranger. He became a manager of Financial Newspaper Proprietors Ltd., an English holding company that controlled several publications, including 'The Economist.' He emigrated to the United States in 1940, where he joined Trans World Airlines in 1943 as assistant to the chairman. In 1947, he worked for the World Bank as an economist. After some time as a consultant, he worked for the Department of Commerce from 1964-1980. The Baltische Hefte was issued as an annual until the final number (B.21), starting in October 1954. Library of Congress records suggest that this periodical grew out of an issue in 1951 as supplement to Baltische Briefe, and then in 1952-1953 as supplement to Baltische Rundschau. See OCLC Number: 1519095. .
