Coloured illustrated frontispiece, being a reproduction of a painting attributed to Gerard Granville, "Balzac with Frederick Lemaitre the actor and Theophile Gautier.". Within the text there are 39 coloured and 162 black-and-white illustrations. Yellow tint to top paper edge. Yellow coloured boards with blind stamped title running down the front fore edge of the book and black writing on the spine. Illustrated dust wrapper, showing "Balzac wearing his monk's robe" by Boulanger, with orange and white writing on the front panel and spine. A biography of the French 19th century writer Honore Balzac. slight rubbing at the heel of the spine, and slight dustiness of the top edge of the textblock, erasure mark at the top of the front free end page, otherwise a clean and tidy copy.
