About This Item

[LGBTQ pulp] Tryon, Mark. The Twisted Loves of Nym O'Sullivan. New York: Universal Publishing and Distributing Corporation, 1960. First edition mass-market softcover paperback. 160 pages. Measures 4.25" x 7". Mark Tyron's notorious novel and banned book was originally published under the title Sweeter than Life. In 1953, undercover police officers in Los Angeles bought a copy of Sweeter Than Life from a bookseller named Eleazar Smith, and charged him with obscenity. Originally found guilty, Smith appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which then ruled in his favor. Later editions were published under the titled Twisted Loves and The Twisted Loves of Nym O'Sullivan. The Illustrated cover features two young women, one in the foreground who sits on a bed in a vibrant yellow dress, and behind her is another woman with long, blonde hair, looking down and smiling as she rises from the bed. The plot follows a woman who was raised by a man-hating lesbian and her relationships that developed later in life as a result. Front cover reads: "The bitter truth about a lesbian who hated men ..."
