About This Item
[Photo Album] [Basketball ]Photo album of teenagers around 1917-1918 playing basketball, at the beach, and sledding. Also photos of uniformed WWI military on leave. 48 silver gelatin photos. 7 1/4 x 11 1/4 in. Original black cloth boards. 100 pg. First 15 pages used. Gilt title "Photographs" on front cover. 3 photos of the 1918 girls' basketball team with "WHS 1918" written on the ball. The girls' uniforms are an interesting balance between an athletic necessity for free movement without causing a controversy over non-feminine clothing for the young ladies; they wear elbow-length shirts with a neckerchief and long, billowy culottes that would allow them to run and jump on the court, while maintaining their modesty. 4 men dressed in WWI-era military coats and hats stand on a street corner. 1 photos of a uniformed sailor posing with a female friend. Group of 15 girls pose on veranda outside a large building, perhaps as a class portrait; two other photos show the group sitting on the lawn in front of the same building. 12 photos at the beach show a group of boys and girls in their swimming outfits: swim caps and short, above the knee dresses for girls, and shorts and tank tops for the boys. They pose on the sandy beach, standing in the surf, and onboard a small boat. 1 photo of the boys' 1917 basketball team (with 1 figure cut out). 2 photos of girls sledding in a wintery scene. Photo of a crowd lined up to watch a parade, and 2 photos of women wearing costumes of dresses from the late 1800s. 2 photos have one figure cut out. Tear in Page 9. Four photos loose. Overall Good condition.
