About This Item

London: Ian Allan Ltd. / Book Club . Very Good/Very Good. 1996. First Edition. Hard Cover. 4to Very heavy book will only be supplied to a UK address no extra postage will be asked for beyond standard default. Red cloth with bright gilt lettering on spine, with a glossy dust jacket which is in a sleeve protector. A comprehensive reference work bringing together the story and achievements of the British and Commonwealth armies over 300 years of service. 398pp. This is a remarkable work of reference. It brings together into one comprehensive volume the story of the achievements of the British and Commonwealth armies over 300 years of service. It tells of and lists the battles fought, whether they were honoured or - equally important - whether they were not and are now largely forgotten, and which regiments were involved. During the past 30 years the British Army has been much reduced in size and some old and famous regiments and many batteries of the Royal Artillery have ceased to exist. Most of the infantry regiments which are left have been amalgamated into vast amorphous 'large' regiments, all of which bear much the same list of amalgamated Battle Honours, whilst those Honours which their integral parts have won have been submerged. Soon individual regimental achievements will be lost other than to members of these regimental families. This book sets out to ensure that this does not happen - that the Honours granted in the past, from 'Tangier' in 1662 to 'Falkland Islands' in 1982, and the regiments that won them are not forgotten. In providing such information it will prove invaluable to military historians or anybody who has ever wondered about the lineage and honours of British and Commonwealth units. .
