About This Item
MP3 Audio CD. Two mariners, Harbutt and Raft, talk over their troubles as laborers under the management of a rich owner. In a gale, Raft and the other workers must go up a pole of the three-master to manipulate a rope gone amiss. Once they control that escaping rope, they stop to look into another ship from afar. It is a liner several have watched in the past. We are presented to the people of this new craft, the Gaston de Paris. The owner is Prince Selm, who likes the best things in life, but is lured to the ocean. His tourists are an old strange woman, Madame de Warens, and her adopted child, Cleo de Bromsart, a bachelorette of 20 years of age who peers down on the lower classes. Madame de Warens is distraught that Cleo has declined Selm's marriage proposal. Cleo, having an impulse to go on the sun deck, dons a storm apparel and starts to mount the rungs. Swiftly the contraptions lunge the boat forward quickly, flinging Cleo back. She hurries up on sun deck to watch the three-master flying close, the label Albatross on its edge. Her craft is tilting to anchorage. The final thing she recalls is the voice of Prince Selm. Several queries persist: the destiny of either boat, the welfare of Madame Warens, and finally the expectations of Cleo and Prince Selm. Henry De Vere Stacpoole was an Irish writer, born in Ireland in Kingstown now known as Dún Laoghaire. His most popular novel is the 1908 love story The Blue Lagoon, which has been made into a movie in no less than four times. He printed under his real name and at times the pen name Tyler De Saix. After a short profession as a ship's physician, which brought him to different outlandish places in the South Pacific Ocean which was then used in his stories.
