London: Printed at the Chiswick Press, 1913. First Edition. Very good in publisher's brown cloth with light shelf wear to corners and edges with light to moderate foxing to both text and plates throughout, and prior owner bookplate, top edge gilt, deckle edges/Good scarce dust wrapper which has been professionally repaired.. Limited edition signed by Sumner, an early member of the Arts and Crafts movement, who later rabidly pursued local amateur archaeology. The content of this work is archaeology but with an Arts and Crafts aesthetic, and is filled throughout with Sumner's illustrations and maps. Even "Tolkien was very much influenced by the Arts and Crafts illustration style of Heywood Sumner." Durotriges Project, Bournemouth University, @Durotrigesdig, March 1, 2023. A beautiful work.
