VIII, 90 pp. text concerning the ruins, monuments, reliefs and sculptures of ancient Rome, including 128 engravings, several depicting architectural plans, on 73 numbered plates executed by Dominico Montagu after drawings by Barbault, a former student and later rival of Piranesi. Some extremely minor scattered soiling or toning. Large folio. Full-leather, marbled, hand-tooled and gilt binding; spine with six raised bands. Some old worm damage along spine, minor rubbing and abrasions, especially to extremities, some slight leather loss to corners. Rome (Bouchard & Gravier) 1761. Rossetti 750; Borroni 8193; Cicognara 3592; Olschki 16398. An excellent copy of this scarce and important work on ancient world art and architecture, depicting the highlights of ancient Roman architecture.
