About This Item

London: The Illustrated London News. Very Good+. 1885. First Edition. Print. The Illustrated London News; No. ; Vol. LXXXV; 1 pages; Image measures 14.5 X 9 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page engraving with several illustrations from the March 28, 1885 issue of The London Illustrated News depicting The Bechuanaland Expedition -- From Sketches by Our Special Artist, Mr. Julius M. Price of Methuen's Horse. Julius Mendes Price (1857 – 1924) was an artist, war correspondent, explorer, traveller, journalist and caricaturist for Vanity Fair (signed "Imp", "Jmp" or "jmp"). He was a special war artist and correspondent for the Illustrated London News. For journalist purposes he enlisted as a trooper in Methuen's Horse and served in the Bechuanaland campaign 1884–1885 and continued serving with the regiment until it was disbanded. Several of his newspaper serial reports were later published in book form. Sir Amédée Forestier (Paris 1854 – 18 November 1930 London) was an Anglo-French artist and illustrator who specialised in historical and prehistoric scenes, and landscapes. Forestier studied art under Henri Lehmann at the École des Beaux-arts. In 1882 he began working for the Illustrated London News, producing illustrations for news items and fictional stories. Forestier became known for his historical illustrations, especially his carefully researched drawings of archaeological finds such as prehistoric man. His drawings are notable for their attention to detail, a consequence of the need to convey a lot of visual information, with little accompanying text, in the popular illustrated magazines of the day. .
