About This Item

London: for J. Wenman, 1777. Disbound. Good. 18p. 21.5 cm. Disbound. Frontispiece, title page and page of dramatis personae disconnected from the rest of the text which remains sewn together. Good condition.

John Gay's three-act play, The Beggar's Opera (1728) is a ballad opera with music originally by Johann Christoph Pepusch. A classic satire of the Augustan period in English literature, the play is in part still popular today because of Bertoldt Brecht's revision of the play as The Three-Penny Opera in 1928 to celebrate the play's 200th anniversary.
