John Gay's three-act play, The Beggar's Opera (1728) is a ballad opera with music originally by Johann Christoph Pepusch. A classic satire of the Augustan period in English literature, the play is in part still popular today because of Bertoldt Brecht's revision of the play as The Three-Penny Opera in 1928 to celebrate the play's 200th anniversary.
