About This Item

Bern, A. Francke, 1909-1914. Two papers in one. Large 4to (30.2 x 22.7 cm). 504 [xii, 248; ix, 235] pp.; 94 [25; 69] text figures; four [1; 3] plates, of which three [1; 2] very large, full-colour, folded, with profiles. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. = Two papers in the series, Beiträge zur geologischen Karte der Schweiz, being the numbers 53 and 74 of the series, and both dealing with the Engadin valley. “The Engadin or Engadine (German: Engadin, Italian: Engadina, Romansh: Engiadina; tr[anslation]: garden of the Inn) is a long valley in the Swiss Alps located in the canton of Graubünden in southeast Switzerland. It follows the route of the Inn River from its headwaters at Maloja Pass running northeast until the Inn flows into Austria one hundred kilometers downstream. The Engadin is protected by high mountains on all sides and is famous for its sunny climate” (Wikipedia). The first paper is by Tarnuzzer (Teil I) and U. Grubenmann (Teil II). The second paper was jointly written by A. Spitz and G. Dyhrenfurth, and appears to be much rarer. One plate shows Mesoic fossils, mainly molluscs. The others are fine full-colour profiles. As usual with these 'appendices' to the Swiss geological maps, the maps themselves are not present as they were sold separately. Stamp on front free endpaper recto; board extremities slightly rubbed, a few leaves with a short marginal tear, otherwise a very good copy. Not in Cat. BM(NH).
