New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1926. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this notable collection of stories (one tiny bubble to the front board, some minor spotting seen when held at an angle to the light), in a Near Fine dust jacket (which appears once to have been covered by an acetate overjacket affixed to the jacket's flap corners with small portions of said acetate overjacket remaining affixed at the jacket's flap corners ---- otherwise Fine with only light edge wear and some foxing to the verso); being a collection of the best Short Stories of the year and notable for containing the first book appearance of Ernest Hemingway's short story "The Undefeated". The story later appeared in Hemingway's second short story collection "Men Without Women" (Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927), and centers on a bullfighter, Manuel Garcia, who is just out of the hospital and looking for work. While his old friend and picador discourages him from taking on a fight, Garcia nevertheless does so and is injured in his first fight. With the protagonist fighting an animal while considered by those who know him to be too old to fight, the story to a degree presages Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", giving it an added importance. Copies in the original dust jacket are exceedingly scarce. An altogether about Fine copy and exceedingly scare when in the dust jacket and in a condition as nice as is this copy.

Santa Barbara, CA: Unicorn Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 1971. Limited Signed Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. A few thin, dark marks to the paper of the back cover. Slightest bumps to the lower tips of the covers.; This poem is written in Levine's characteristic style of short, declarative phrasing and the lines speak in the voice of a child, the voice of an adult, and the voice of the wall, all presumed to be in Spain. The dedication references the girl Pili, the author's wife, and Spain, for which he had a long-standing fascination. Prior to his 2011 appointment as Poet Laureate of the United States, Philip Levine won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, the National Book Award, the Ruth Lily Prize in Poetry and the Wallace Stevens Award. The author was also named Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Copy 43 of an edition of 50, numbered in yellow ink and signed in black by Levine. Description:
1822 Don Quixote Cervantes Chivalry Motteux English Lockhart Notes SCOTTISH 5v

"Small wonder if the world received Don Quixote with delight! There was nothing like unto it before: there has been nothing to eclipse it since". – Rius, D. Leopoldo.
A rare, 19th-century English translation of Cervantes' masterpiece – "Don Quixote". This edition, translated by Peter Anthony Motteux, is considered a desirable English translation, which was very popular after its release in 1700. However, this edition was criticized and condemned by later printers for:
· Adopting a frivolous style, rather than a more serious and ironic tone
· Turning Don Quixote and Sancho Panza into buffoons
· Casting the work in a "Franco-Cockney" rather than Spanish culture
This 1822 edition was published in Edinburgh, printed in five volumes, and includes a 'life of Cervantes' by J.G. Lockhart – the first edition to feature Lockhart's essay.

Lucan’s epic poem "Pharsalia" (written during the reign of Nero) concerns the Roman Civil War between Julius Caesar and Pompey. In 48 b.c.e the conflict came to a conclusion with Pompey’s defeat on the Thessalian plains of Pharsalus. The poem then extends down to the capture of Egyptian Alexandria. Lucan’s epic is also noted for containing many elements of the supernatural, including turgid scenes of magic and witchcraft. Bassorah edition, number 129 limited to 1000 copies.Burton's translation was one of two unabridged and unexpurgated English translations done in the 1880s; the first was by John Payne, under the title The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (1882–1884, nine volumes). Burton's ten volume version was published almost immediately afterward with a slightly different title. This, along with the fact that Burton closely advised Payne and partially based his books on Payne's, led later to charges of plagiarism. Owing to the sexual imagery in the source texts (which Burton made a special study of, adding extensive footnotes and appendices on "Oriental" sexual mores) and to the strict Victorian laws on obscene material, both translations were printed as private editions for subscribers only, rather… Read More

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
