Description:
Signed by artist. Jasper Johns has been called the greatest living American Artist. He is associated with Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada and pop art. Honors include the National Medal of Art and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His works have sold for the most by any living artist. This is the softcover exhibition catalogue from a 5 city tour (2 in the US) in 1978. Laid in is an invitation to the Members Preview of the exhibition where it mentions that the artist will be present. I really don't know if this is a first edition, I just presume so since this is a short tour. The laid in invitation is photographed with the artists signature page. Jasper Johns has signed and dated on the first free end page (no inscription). The date on the signature corresponds with the date of the Members Preview on the invitation. The book is in near fine condition, the corners are square, and the pages are clean and unmarked.

SIGNED BY DAVID without inscription directly to the title page; a beautiful well-crafted early signature. True 1957 Lutterworth 1st edition but bookplate (W.H. Smith & Son Library) on front pastedown. Condition of book is good with clean text, actually feels unread, and blemishes on the boards as shown in my photos. Dust jacket is price intact but has numerous closed tears and edgewear. I've added a new mylar cover and perhpas you will agree that the cover still retains a fair amount of appeal. A truly scarce signed copy of David's 2nd published book. Expedited and international shipping are welcome; signed by author.

Signed by the author. First edition, first printing."Poor White belongs among the few books that have restored with memorable vitality the life of an era, its hopes and desires, its conflicts between material prosperity and ethics, and its disillusionments, in a manner that stimulates the historical imagination…. No novel of the American small town in the Middle West evokes in the minds of its readers so much of the cultural heritage of its milieu as does Poor White; nor does Anderson in his later novels ever recapture the same richness of association, the ability to make memorable each scene in the transition from an agrarian way of living to a twentieth-century spectacle of industrial conflict with its outward display of physical comfort and wealth.Condition:Signed on half title. Description:
London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1972. First Edition. 8vo. 286pp. Publisher's original tan cloth titled in gilt to the spine, in a very good, clean, and sharp example of the dustjacket, some minor edgewear, and a little spotting to the top edge and the inside flap, but essentially a near fine copy of an outstanding book. Inscribed by the author to the title page:"To Lisa - Best Wishes, Angela"The recipient is Lisa Tuttle, award winning science fiction author who very much shared Carter's desire for feminist interrogation of existing tropes, or the practice of asking "New questions of old texts", a direct quote from Tuttle, in the service of a kind of feminist revisionist mythology, the practice of which Angela Carter all but perfected in works like The Bloody Chamber, and The Magic Toyshop. A nice association in lovely condition.
