About This Item

Wien, Alfred Hölder, 1881. 8vo (22.0 x 14.3 cm). vi, 212 pp.; several woodcuts. Original printed wrappers. = A nice copy of a critical study on Darwin's work on the climbing of plants, by the Austrian botanist Julius Ritter von Wiesner (1838-1916). Publication of this work was followed by an exchange of letters and ideas between Darwin and Wiesner (see Darwin Correspondence Project online). Uncut. Inscribed on the front wrapper by J. P. MacMorland. Inserted: an invoice, dated 1 March 1929, by the Leipziger antiquarian K. F. Koehler, to the Dutch professor of Botany, C. E. B. Bremekamp (then working at the Transvaal University College, Pretoria), listing this copy and several others - including one work by Charles Darwin - from Koehler's catalogue 51. Small chip to spine foot, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
