Includes an index and a large fold-out of "The Grand Canyon of the Colorado: Panorama looking east, south, and west from Point Sublime," by William H. Holmes. Previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Better than very good in like jacket. A biography of Major John Wesley Powell commonly referred to as the father of the United States Geological Survey. Powell was also the first head of the Bureau of American Ethnology. While this work centers on Powell it is also going to touch on the surveys of Hayden, King and Wheeler. Colberg A13. 1.a. Ford 65.

Synopsis
In this book Wallace Stegner recounts the sucesses and frustrations of John Wesley Powell, the distinguished ethnologist and geologist who explored the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and the homeland of Indian tribes of the American Southwest. A prophet without honor who had a profound understanding of the American West, Powell warned long ago of the dangers economic exploitation would pose to the West and spent a good deal of his life overcoming Washington politics in getting his message across.
