About This Item

Houghton Mifflin , 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good Dust Jacket. This old book with dust jacket is clean, solid and in great shape! This is a First Edition hardcover book with 438 pages including some illustrations and photos plus a large fold-out map in the front. The binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. The pages are clean with no soiling, writing, or tears. The title and copyright page show the same date of 1954 making this a First Edition. The dust jacket is over 99% intact with a few tiny chips at the top edge (more like edgewear), two, one-inch closed tears on the top of the front and a half inch closed tear on the bottom of the front. I have placed the DJ in a fresh mylar jacket and this old book looks and feels great! We always ship in a sturdy cardboard box!

Synopsis

In this book Wallace Stegner recounts the sucesses and frustrations of John Wesley Powell, the distinguished ethnologist and geologist who explored the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and the homeland of Indian tribes of the American Southwest. A prophet without honor who had a profound understanding of the American West, Powell warned long ago of the dangers economic exploitation would pose to the West and spent a good deal of his life overcoming Washington politics in getting his message across. Only now, we may recognize just how accurate a prophet he was. "This book goes far beyond biography, into the nature and soul of the American West. It is Stegner at his best, assaying an entire era of our history, packing his pages with insights as shrewd as his prose." —Ivan Doig
