About This Item

Jonathan Cape. London: Jonathan Cape, 1935 8vo., black cloth boards, lettered in silver to spine, with publisher's device to foot; both boards with inlaid panel of silver and yellow decorate paste-paper; upper edge black, lower untrimmed; original unclipped pictorial dust jacket (7s. 6d. net), featuring a design by Lewis; pp. [x], 11-88, [viii], with frontis and a further 20 full-page black and white images throughout; together with 11 in-text; a very good copy, the boards sound, prelims and endpapers lightly spotted; else clean throughout, the jacket with flaps and verso spotted, lightly browned, particularly along spine and folds; with some nicking and chipping, particularly to head and foot of spine, and upper edge of folds.  First edition.  The sole collaboration between Mitchison - author, poet, and fervent campaigner for social justice - and Wyndham Lewis - writer, painter, and co-founder of the Vorticist movement. Mitchison's first novel was published in 1923, and she went on to write a further 70 in her lifetime. She was also involved in the campaign for access to birth control in the 1920s. Although the pair did not publish any other works together (some suggesting that this was because of a disagreement), they remained close, and a detailed portrait of Mitchison, painted by Lewis in 1938, is still on display in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1935.
