Mitchison's first novel was published in 1923, and she went on to write a further 70 in her lifetime. She was also involved in the campaign for access to birth control in the 1920s. Although the pair did not publish any other works together (some suggesting that this was because of a disagreement), they remained close, and a detailed portrait of Mitchison, painted by Lewis in 1938, is still on display in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.  .
