One of my favourite books. A very poignant tale written in a wonderful literary style by one of England's greatest authors. Coming originally from Manchester in the UK, though resident in Australia for the past 30 years, I always loved the connection I felt when reading about familiar street names and districts in the Manchester. Was delighted to obtain an old copy of this book a few years ago from New South Wales and it is a book I will re-read many times. Alongside it in my book case is another favourite novel (much more recent) - the Story of Edgar Sawtelle - one of the most moving books I have ever read and the only book I have immediately re-read when getting to the end.
