About This Item
Hurd & Houghton, 1873. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Very scarce. In very good condition, green buckram boards with gilt titles and decoration to front and spine. Lightly rubbed to corners and spine slightly darkened with one or two small marks to the boards. Internally clean other than a couple of labels of The British Drama League to the front end papers and the very occasional age blemish to the pages. A very scarce copy of this play by Elizabeth Kinney about the famous 16th century Italian Noblewoman who was Mistress and later the second wife of Francesco de Medici the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Mrs Kinney wrote this and other works of a Florentine nature during the time spent in Italy with her husband during the 1850's and 60's where she met and no was doubt influenced by Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Tennyson, and Anthony Trollope. A number of plays and works of fiction appeared in the latter half of the 19th century about the life of Bianca Cappello, with interest in the subject understndably inspired by the travels to Italy by numbers of the Romantic literati of the day.
