About This Item
Venetiis, Italia: Nicolaum Pezzana, 1714. Hardcover. Good. Venetiis: Nicolaum Pezzana, 1714. In two 12mo. voumes. Later binding. Half leather, with decorated leather title and volume labels, marbled boards. Good plus condition, of binding and text. Very light foxing to edges, but pages are unblemished. Each volume has a title page with publisher and date. The first volume (454 pages) has the engraved Piccinni title page. See note below. Something appears to have been erased (not effaced) mid-title page between the heads of the two figures. There is substantial introductory material before the book of Genesis: "Praefatio ad Lectorem" (7 pages); "Clemens Papa VIII Adperpetuam rei memoiram" M. Vestrius Barbianus; "De Canonicis Scripturis Decretum Ex Concilio Tridentino Settione quarta" (declaration, 3pp); "Hieronym Prologus Galeatus" (5 pp); "Hieronymus Paulino" (14pp); and "Praefatio S. Hieronymi Presbyteri In Pentateucum Moysi, ad Desiderium" (34 unnumbered pages). Deuteronomy is the last book in volume 1, with FINIS. The second volume (557 pages), has its own title page and page number series. It begins with Liber Josue, and ends with Paralipomenon (Chronicles). The Latin Bible described here was published by Nicolaus Pezzana, a Venetian printer who produced at least five editions of the text between 1706 and 1765. All the Latin Bibles printed by the Pezzana family share an engraved title page designed by Isabella Piccini (1644-1734), the daughter of a Venetian engraver and an artist in her own right. This copy's title page bears her name on a small scroll at far left. On the title page she designed for the Pezzana Bibles, Moses and Peter stand on both sides of an open Bible. Moses wears a horned headdress and holds the Tablets of the Law and a staff while Peter wears the triple crown of the Popes and holds a large cross. The Dove of the Holy Spirit hovers between Moses and Peter. Christâ_x0080__x0099_s initials are engraved on Peterâ_x0080__x0099_s breast; at bottom center, a globe is marked with the names of Europe and Africa. The image is more refined, with different features than some editions, earlier or later, perhaps because of the small size of the edition.
