About This Item

William Pickering, London, special copy on large and thick paper, first edition, 1834. One of only 50 sets on large and thick paper. 4 vols, contemporary morocco with blind-decorated spines and gilt titles, gilt decorated turn-ins, all edges gilt, 8vo, 22.5 cm,. xii, 530 +531-1054 + 1055-1528 + 1529-2002 pp. Rare in this large-paper issue, which is not noticed by Brunet nor mentioned in Pickering & Chatto's "Catalogue 708. William Pickering and his successors 1820-1900." There is no record of the large-paper copy in ABPC. The 1834 first edition was the only one to be published by William Pickering, the manual being issued in parts to form four "handsomely printed volumes" (Keynes). Breslauer and Folter annotate this in their catalogue: "First edition of what is still the best general bibliography of English literature from the book collector's viewpoint. A largely well-preserved ex-library set of the special large-paper issue, gilt number on spines, library labels on pastedown endpapers, small library stamps on prelims and last page of each volume, library marks on versos of the title-pages, front free endpaper of vol III partly adhered to front pastedown endpaper on which is pasted the bookplate of James Worsley Pennyman. Lowndes "Address" in volume 1 (pp [1]-iii ) is bound after the preface (pp v-xii). Corners a little worn, spine-bands slightly rubbed, Vol IV slightly torn at head of spine, otherwise a Very Good set.
