William Pickering, London, first edition, 1834. 4 vols, recent cloth with original spine-labels laid down, 8vo,. xii, 530 +531-1054 + 1055-1528 + 1529-2002, [1] pp. The first edition of Lowndes' stupendous achievement and the only one to be published by William Pickering, this manual was issued in parts to form four "handsomely printed volumes" (Keynes). Breslauer and Folter annotate this in their catalogue: "First edition of what is still the best general bibliography of English literature from the book collector's viewpoint. Spine-labels chipped and worn with loss, otherwise a Very Good and soundly bound set of the first edition. Original instructions to the binder bound in at end of Volume 4.
