About This Item

Leicester, UK: University of Leicester Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1972. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0718510933 Volume 1. Complete in Itself. Dust jacket complete, unclipped price on flap. Blue cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Light foxing to page tips. lviii, 806 pages clean and tight. This major new bibliography covers the printed sources and literature of English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish municipal history from the earliest times to the end of 1966. The whole work is in a sense supplementary to Charles Gross's A Bibliography of British Municipal History of 1897 (see back of jacket), for it excludes all those titles that Gross cited. However, the subject has grown with municipal history itself in the twentieth century, and the present work is on a much larger scale. This volume, General Works, begins with lists of bibliographies and of guides to records, a section which includes one of the most comprehensive surveys ever published ofthe literature of local maps, and continues through the relevant works on general and local history to detailed bibliographies ofinunicipal government and its services. The plan of the general division is repeated in the sections devoted to works that are exclusively concerned with Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Irish Republic. The most substantial addition to the subject as it was treated by Gross is probably in the sections on town planning, which contain about 1,000 titles, but such matters as public health, housing, and emergency services are as comprehensively treated, over the entire period, as the more traditional topics of parliamentary representation, the control of trade, and municipal finances. This volume contains 6,000 entries, together with a substantial introduction, many sectional prefaces, a table of statutes cited, and an index. Works which are concerned with specific cities and boroughs are not included here. They will be contained in the succeeding volumes of the Bibliography, which will be arranged in an alphabetical sequence of places. .
