About This Item

Conway Maritime Press, London, second printing, 1970. Cloth, 8vo,. xxii, 163 pp. Approximately 2,500 entries. A useful reprint of the 1930 first edition. Manwaring's bibliography remains a key reference, covering "British Naval History from the earliest times until roughly speaking just after the Battle of Trafalgar" and including works on this period published up to 1930. It is not a guide to individual books, but rather to "the mass of naval material which lies buried in books; in periodicals and magazines; in the Transactions of Learned Societies; and in Manuscripts in various archives". Manwaring's introduction illustrates examples of valuable essays in books which his guide is intended to make accessible (an example from a general source being an essay on the Maritime History of Sussex in that county's Victoria County History), and notes that among the important publications indexed by his bibliography are those of the Navy Records Society,The Mariner's Mirror, Naval Chronicle, Royal United Service Institution Journal, United Service Magazine, Royal Historical Society Transactions, and the English Historical Review. Arranged in two Parts: I by Author II by Subject. Boards largely de-glazed, perhaps from water damage, contents unaffected and Very Good.
