Paris, 1868. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First Editions, 7 volumes published between 1868 and 1873. A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. This has been a working set and as well as bearing the bookplate of their original owner at the front pastedown, a small library label for an old book-auction house can also be found there (each volume). Binding is spotless. Internally complete, with some darkening to the initial pages. The page edges are rather chipped - but not affecting text. 43 pages. 250 by 160mm (9¾ by 6¼ inches). John Clarke (1755–1798) was a minister of the First Church in Boston, Massachusetts. In the first part of the 19th-century, stories and tales of famous voyages were popular throughout the western world – tales of Captain Cook, Columbus, African voyages, and the East India Company occupied readers from all over. Perhaps the best source of these accounts was 'Bibliotheque Portative des Voyages' – an enormous collection of voyage and exploration accounts.
This atlas tome from the 1817 first edition contains views of the voyages of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, an important 17th-century voyager to Persia and India. This tome describes Tavernier's time in Constantinople and Tonkin (Vietnam), noting the customs, costumes, and traditions of the people.
It should be mentioned that his volume contains 23 impressive illustrations including a full map of Asia, city view of Constantinople, a portrait of Tavernier, Tonkin funeral processions, and even an engraving of a venomous King cobra!

Thomas Shadwell was a famous 17th-century English poet who wrote a number of plays and poems, many of which have been set to a number of songs. One of Shadwell's earliest plays was 'The Royal Shepherdess' which was an adaption of John Fountain's 'Rewards of Virtue'. According to Lowndes, Shadwell altered the play and simply published under a new title in 1669.
