About This Item
Hardcover. Two volumes in one: [20] pages, 656, 676 columns, [2] pages, 212, 200 columns; [18], 294 pages, 106 columns, [17] pages, index. Besterman 3727. Renaissance Italian artists and merchants influenced the mathematics of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance in several ways. In the 15th century a group of Tuscan artists incorporated linear perspective into their practice and teaching, about a century before the subject was formally treated by mathematicians. By 1380 an algebraic symbolism had been developed in Italy in which letters were used for the unknown, for its square, and for constants. Included as well are all the mathematical works of Galileo. Riccardi's work remains a standard on the subject of Italian mathematical literature from the beginning of printing to the 1800s. It includes 15,000 descriptions of books in alphabetical order with full title, collations, cross references to other standard works and valuable annotations which include rarity and number of editions. This reprint includes the corrections and additions undertaken by the Royal Academy of Science in 1928. Green binder's cloth stamped in gold, 23.5 cm.; new from publisher in shrinkwrap.
