Includes sections on the states and territories; the federal government and public establishments connected to it; the Indians; the population, agriculture, trade, revenue and resources; manufactures; commerce; canals and roads, etc. Small bookplates of the Regency Circulating Library of Whitehaven on the front pastedowns, mild scattered foxing troughout, paper loss to the spines (especially of volume II), edges dusty, wear to extremities, occasional tear to the leaves. With twenty-three large, cabinet-size photographs by William H. Schurch. Originally published in parts, the work was supposed to include fifteen issues but only ten were published. According to the publisher's advertisement on the wrappers, each part contained two large photographic views (which retailed for $1 when sold separately.) Laid in are several sheets of paper, probably contemporary, with a hand-written index to the text, including a complete list of the photographs, which might indicate this copy was bound with twenty-three rather than twenty-five or twenty-six photographs as in some other copies. The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana. "Roman Politique Sur l'etat Present des Affaires de l'Amerique" is a rare, 18th-century treatise on the political influence of European powers in America. Written by Pierre Saintard, this book discusses the role of the American colonies in establishing and continuing trade with Europe, as well as discussing the amount of power that should be given to the colonies. Per the JFBL,
"A consideration of Europe's involvement in North America with a view to establishing a balance of power among the colonizing nations which would eliminate war and encourage commerce."
It should be noted, the dating on this work is a bit ambiguous. According to multiple sources, this work was published in 1756 with the title page being a cancel – a crudely added "I" to the dating to make it read 1757.
