About This Item

Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 24th-25th June, 1974. Printed wrappers, small 4to,. 154 pp, numerous plates (including some folding). Lots 2542-2829. From the introduction: "The second sale of English books printed before 1641 from the Bibliotheca Phillippica includes four works intimately associated with three Tudor and Stuart kings. Henry VIII's Assertio septem sacramentorum adversus Martinum Lutherum, 1521, is the work that earned him the title of Fidei Defensor', borne by all his successors; the copy described below is of particular interest for its contemporary notes in a northern humanistic hand (lot 2596). The copy of his letter to Luther printed by Pynson in 1526 is one of the small number known in the publisher's (or presentation) binding by John Reynes stamped with twin panels of the arms of Christ and those of the King (lot 2597). The main achievement of Edward VIs short reign was the version of the Book of Common Prayer that bears his name, here present in a very fine copy bound in contemporary calf gilt with the royal arms (lot 2691). James I and VI was not only a theological controversialist, like his Tudor predecessor, but a poet as well. His two collections of verse, The essayes of a premise in the divine art of poesie, 1585, and Poeticall exercises at vacant houres [1591], are bound together in a contemporary binding with the royal author's arms and are certainly the most desirable copies to survive of these scarce works (lot 2637). Browned around spine, otherwise Very Good. List of prices realized and buyers loosely laid in.
